Atkinson Clock Tower

Image
I enjoy art, architecture, museums, churches, temples or anything that gives me insight into the history and soul of the place I'm in.  Atkinson Clock Tower is one of the remained British structure in Kota Kinabalu that survived during World War II where located nearby the Padang Merdeka (Independence Field).  It was built in the memory of Francis George Atkinson who was the first Jesselton’s district officer. He was died in December 1902 at the age of 28 because of Borneo Fever or known as Malaria.  His mother, Mary Edith Atkinson dedicates two-faced clock in Jesselton town as a tribute of her son. In April 20, 1905 the clock tower was commissioned then decided that structure was built in his honor. Besides that, the road where the structure was also named after him as Atkinson Drive but now its renamed as Jalan Istana that links Tuaran Road over the ridge and downtown Kota Kinabalu.
